Welcome to the St. Mary’s Healthcare System Resource Directory

This resource directory is for families/caregivers of children who have medically complex needs or long-lasting conditions that require extra health care and support services.

The information in this directory is provided to help you find resources to assist you with finding help for your child and family. The range of care/disability/health issues varies amongst children so the information may or may not pertain to your child.

What you'll find

After a family learns that their child is ill parents/caregivers typically begin to think about how they can best care for their child. The resources in this directory include agencies, service providers, advocacy organizations, and other resources to assist with providing a quality life for children with medically complex needs.

The directory is intended to assist you with being the best advocate for your child. Although we attempt to keep the directory current resources change constantly.

  1. Independent Living Center-Manhattan cidny.org

    CIDNY is the voice of people with disabilities in New York City. Our staff includes social workers, lawyers and other highly qualified professionals, most of whom are people with disabilities. CIDNY’s staff is also ethnically diverse, with language capacity to assist consumers in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Hindi, and American Sign Language.

  2. Independent Living Center-Staten Island siciliving.org

    The Staten Island Center for Independent Living, Inc., is a non-residential resource center that offers services to individuals with disabilities of all ages, their families, significant others, teachers, employers, businesses, and those who believe that an individual with a disability has the right to take responsibility for his/her own life.

    The center is unique in that it is primarily staffed and governed by professionals who have had a personal experience with a disability and believe that disability does not mean inability.

  3. NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA) nyc.gov

    The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)’s mission is to increase opportunities for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers by providing safe, affordable housing and facilitating access to social and community services. More than 400,000 New Yorkers reside in NYCHA’s 334 public housing developments around the five boroughs.

  4. NYC Housing Connect- Department of Housing Preservation and Development nyc.gov

    Assists with finding and applying for affordable housing, HPD does not rent apartments. We work with real estate professionals and community sponsors who market apartments. We require that subsidized apartments be rented through an Open Lottery System to ensure fair and equitable distribution of housing to eligible applicants.

    In order to participate in housing lotteries, you will have to contact building managers, community sponsors and/or real estate professionals directly to fill out an application and enter it in an apartment lottery. There are no brokers’ fees and no application fees.

  5. Disability Opportunity Fund thedof.org

    The DOF coordinates and streamlines the relationship between the disability market, the CDFI industry, government agencies and service providers. We convene the right parties to collectively craft housing solutions, using a variety of strategies. For example, while parents or social service agencies see there is a lack of housing for their children or clients, they don’t always know how to proceed to create housing. We assist with developing business plans and strategies. We help clarify what housing is appropriate, what organizations can help, and how to access the right resources.

    Works on behalf of the prevention of birth defects and provides support to families affected by birth defects (prematurity, heart effects, genetic diseases)

  7. Public Housing Information and Resource Center (PIH) nyc.gov

    Provides decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families and persons with disabilities.  PIH Information/Resource Center is staffed to answer questions/inquiries regarding public housing and housing choice voucher programs and regulations.

  8. Family Eviction Prevention Supplement (FEPS)-Legal Aid legal-aid.org

    The Family Eviction Prevention Supplement was started in 2005 by the Human Resources Administration of New York City as a program to pay back rent and provide ongoing rental assistance for families receiving Public Assistance.  If you meet eligibility criteria, your rent arrears (up to t$7,000) will be paid, and you will receive a monthly housing supplement for ongoing excess rent. The rental arrears payment is a one-time deal, but the monthly housing supplement lasts for five years.
